Peritoneal residual volume (RV) is the volume of dialysis fluid that remains in the peritoneal cavity after the complete drainage. The aim of this single centre study in 54 patients was to evaluate whether RV is related to the body surface area (BSA) or body mass index (BMI), whether RV influences transport characteristics of peritoneal membrane (peritoneal equilibration test) and if RV affects the intraperitoneal pressure and ultrafiltration. Mean value of RV was 165.4 136 ml, no significant correlation was detected between RV and BSA or BMI or ultrafiltration. We detected a significant positive correlation between RV and D/P creatinine and D/P phosphorus. We found a significant negative correlation between RV and the intraperitoneal pressure. Intraindividual variability of RV was insignificant. In the group of patients with low RV we found significantly higher phosporus removal. Higher RV may overestimate D/P creatinine and D/P phosphorus and decrease the efficiency of dialysis.
